Privacy Policy
Ratherish works without accounts, ads or tracking. It keeps only what it needs to count the world’s answer.
1. Who is responsible
Lindhavn Studio, owner Jan Wergin, Speditionstraße 15a, 40221 Düsseldorf, Germany.
E-mail: support@murderandmethod.com
2. In short
- No account, no name, no e-mail address, no phone number.
- No advertising, no advertising ID, no third-party analytics or tracking.
- No location: your country comes from your iPhone’s region setting, not from GPS or your IP address.
- Nobody sees your individual vote — only totals — except members of a circle you choose to join (see 3 f).
3. What is processed
a) Your vote
When you answer a question, the app sends to our server:
- a random, anonymous ID created by the app on first launch (not linked to your name, Apple Account, device ID or advertising ID),
- the question’s ID and your choice (A or B),
- the country code from your iPhone’s region setting (for example “GB”), if there is one,
- the time of the vote.
Purpose: to calculate the worldwide and per-country results and to make sure each question is counted once per device. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the feature you use) and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in a count that can’t be faked).
Per-country results are only shown once a country has a minimum number of votes, and only as totals.
b) Technical connection data
When the app loads a question or sends a vote, our hosting provider necessarily processes your IP address to make the connection. We don’t store IP addresses in our database and don’t derive a country from them. The provider’s logs are deleted automatically after a short time. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (secure operation).
c) Data that stays on your iPhone
Your past answers, your statistics, your settings and the anonymous ID are stored on your device. The daily reminder is a local notification scheduled by your iPhone itself — nothing is sent to us for it.
d) Purchases (Ratherish+)
Buying Ratherish+ is handled entirely by Apple. We receive no payment details and no personal information — only confirmation that the purchase belongs to your Apple Account. Apple’s Privacy Policy applies.
e) Sharing
When you share a question or your answer, the app creates an image on your device and hands it to the app you choose. We don’t learn about it.
f) Circles (optional)
If you create a circle or join one with a code, we store the name you choose for yourself (real, invented or a number — your choice), the circle’s name, your membership and when you joined, linked to your anonymous ID. The other members of your circle see your name and — for each question they have answered themselves — your answer. They never see your anonymous ID.
Purpose: comparing answers with people you invited or whose code you have. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. Retention: until you leave the circle or are removed; an empty circle is deleted. Names are checked automatically for offensive terms. You can hide members on your own device, a circle’s creator can remove members, and you can report offensive names to us by e-mail straight from the app.
g) Contacting us by e-mail
If you write to us, we use your message and e-mail address to reply (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR) and delete them when they’re no longer needed.
4. Recipients and service providers
- Supabase (Supabase Inc., USA) runs our database. The data is stored in a data centre in Ireland (EU), under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR); EU Standard Contractual Clauses cover any access from the USA.
- Apple for the App Store and Ratherish+ purchases.
- GitHub (GitHub Inc., USA) hosts these web pages and technically processes your IP address when you visit; see GitHub’s Privacy Statement. These pages use no cookies, no third-party fonts and no analytics.
We never sell data, share it with other third parties or use it for advertising.
5. How long data is kept
Votes are kept for as long as Ratherish runs, because past results stay visible in the app. If the app is discontinued, we delete the data. To delete the data on your iPhone, delete the app; the anonymous ID may remain in the device’s keychain and is reused after reinstalling, so votes aren’t counted twice.
6. Your rights
You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR), and the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority.
Because votes can’t be linked to a person, we usually can’t find your data ourselves (Art. 11 GDPR). Write to us anyway — we’ll help as far as is technically possible.
Right to object: where we process data on the basis of legitimate interests, you may object at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21 GDPR).
7. Children
Ratherish is meant for a general audience and doesn’t ask for anyone’s age. No data that identifies a person is collected.
8. Changes
If the app changes in a way that involves different data, we’ll update this policy. The version published here applies.
